The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series visited Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, and it was a pretty intense race. Joey Logano was able to take the early lead from polesitter Jeff Gordon but was unable to enjoy it for very long, as the caution came out on lap three when Kyle Busch hit the wall in turn 1. Following the restart on lap six, Logano was able to continue holding his lead and continue building some momentum. That was paused, however, when the caution returned on lap 24 following a turn 2 accident involving Danica Patrick, Matt Kenseth, Justin Allgaier, Michael Annett, Trevor Bayne, JJ Yeley, and Martin Truex, Jr.

Following the restart, the battle for the lead involved Joey Logano and Jeff Gordon. The two were battling it out for the lead, often close behind one another. At one point, they were three wide with another driver while battling for position. Logano took the lead in that battle, but Gordon retook it the very next lap. The battle was interrupted on lap 95 when rookie Kyle Larson hit the wall, causing his car to catch on fire. Joey Logano again quickly took the lead following lap 106, but Gordon was able to fight his way back up to contention after a relatively poor restart.

The caution returned again on lap 167 when Brad Keselowski hit the wall. Yet again, it was Joey Logano and Jeff Gordon leading the field to the green and fighting for position. The race to the checkered didn’t go uninterrupted, however, as the last caution came with about twenty to laps to go following a spin by Brian Vickers. Gordon had a great restart and took the lead soon after the green flew, while Logano dropped to second then third as Kevin Harvick got around him for second.

Jeff Gordon went on to take the checkered flag for the third time this season with Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Paul Menard, and Dale Earnhardt Jr rounding out the top five.
